Phuket
Island

|
Laem
Prom Theb |
| Phuket
is Thailand's largest island and lies in the Andaman
Sea off the country's south-western coast. The island
is connected to the mainland by the Sarasin bridge,
but has retained an unique culture fused from Chinese
and Portuguese influences merged with the culture of
the sea-gypsy people. The island's terrain varies from
rocky beaches and long, broad sweeps of sand to
limestone cliffs and forested hills. |

Near
Laem Sing Beach |
| Phuket
offers great beaches, tropical vegetation and a
pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. The main resorts include
Patong Beach, Karon & Kata Beach. Roads radiate from
Phuket Town, located in the south-east of the island,
making it a good base for exploring the island. |

Getting
Around in
Phuket is easy. Most of the beach resorts are small
enough to walk around and most hotels are located
close to the beach, restaurants and shopping areas. If
you'd rather not walk your hotel can arrange for a taxi
or tuk tuk.
If you want to go exploring the island on your own,
there are plenty of places to hire cars or
you can take the local bus. There are two types of
buses, the blue open-air buses and the new green
air-conditioned buses. Both run from Phuket town to
the main resorts frequently. |
